My Twelfth Great Grandfather – William Stone
William Stone, my 12th great grandfather, was born about 1490 in Lancashire, England. His grandson Captain William Stone (1603-1660), or my 9th great grandfather, was in America as early as 1633. He and his wife Verlinda Graves established their home in Accomac, Virginia. He was the third Proprietary Governor of Maryland. His great-great grandson was Thomas Stone, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Stone is my first cousin, seven times removed. I descend from Thomas Stone’s uncle John Stone, born about 1704, Poynton Manor, King George County, Virginia. Calvin Augustin Stone is his 3rd great grandson. He is my great grandfather and was one of the early Mormon pioneers that came to Utah to help settle Salt Lake Valley. I remember well his son and my grandfather David Augustin Stone. He loved everyone. He was a farmer in Aberdeen, Idaho, when I was very tiny. He later became a real estate agent in Idaho Falls, Idaho. During World War II he moved his family to Stockton, California and continued in real estate there. His sons became contractors and built many homes and shopping malls in Stockton and in nearby cities. For many years my grandfather was an avid genealogist and spent countless hours searching for his ancestors. Grandpa Stone died in 1961 at the age of 86. I was living in Stockton at the time and attended his funeral.
